Pennsylvania Lt. Governor John Fetterman (D-PA) has filed the paperwork declaring that he is considering a second attempt to win a seat in the U.S. Senate. Fetterman filed his statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday. The filing was first reported by the Post-Gazette in Pittsburgh.
Democrat Fetterman previously announced on his campaign Website that he was exploring a ran for the U.S Senate seat now held by Republican Pat Toomey. Toomey has said he does not plan to run for re-election and also does not plan, as had been widely speculated, to run for governor.
Fetterman, the unconventional former mayor of the western Pennsylvania town of Braddock, gained a statewide following when he sought the Democratic Partys nomination to run against Toomey in 2016. He finished third in that primary, behind winner Katie McGinty and former Congressman Joe Sestak.
He began serving as lieutenant governor in 2019 and has repeatedly drawn the spotlight in recent months with his Tweets and comments defending the integrity of the 2020 election against Republicans, from Pennsylvania and elsewhere, who sought to cast doubt on President Joe Bidens win.
