Pa. man accused of abusing elderly mother, washing her with ammonia-soaked mop
The case comes from Pittston Twp., Luzerne County, where the Citizens Voice reports the 50-year-old son allegedly beat and verbally abused his care-dependent mother for years, including
bathing her private parts with a mop soaked with ammonia, according to police.
Suspect Michael Patrick Boyle’s 73-year-old mother is non-ambulatory, requiring a wheelchair or rolling walker to get around and needing assistance in various activities of daily living. Boyle regularly failed to provide her care —
in one 13-day period he provided her only stale bread and water, according to police.
One day in May 2017, Boyle pulled back the shower curtain on his mother and tried to dump her off a shower seat, leading to a struggle in which his mother injured her right arm, police said. On another occasion, Boyle took a mop soaked with ammonia and Fabuloso cleaner and roughly began scrubbing his mother’s privates, police said. She finally reported the abuse on Oct. 23, 2019. Police arrived to find the elderly woman covered with bruises from her head to her feet. Boyle faces charges of conspiring to commit stalking, conspiring to commit a crime against a dependent person, endangering the welfare of a care-dependent person, hitting a care-dependent person, indecent exposure and simple assault. At last report, he was lodged in Luzerne County Prison, unable to post $50,000 bail.
