Man accused of bringing Molotov cocktail to Harrisburg bar asked about Russian connection

When a man entered Zembie’s Sports Tavern a little more than two weeks ago, he asked the owner’s son if the family was Russian. Since Karagiannis’ family is Greek, as is the name Zembie’s, his son said no. According to owner Angelo Karagiannis, that was a question coming from a man who was possibly having mental health problems. Later in the evening, the man threatened the bar staff and patrons with a Molotov cocktail.

Local and federal authorities have charged 33-year-old Yevgeniy Maksymiv with going to the bar on Feb. 28 around 10 p.m. and threatening to blow up the restaurant while people were inside.

The man sat and started a tab, sometimes winking at and blowing kisses at Karagiannis’ son. He drank beer, ordered some wings, then went to an area toward the back to talk to other customers, Karagiannis said, adding that customers got offended and told his son that Maksymiv smelled like gasoline.

Karagiannis’s son and a regular customer were able to push him out the back door, and he ran away. It was easy to track Maksymiv down because he had left his credit card at the bar.
