Governor Shapiro announces Super Bowl LVII bets with Missouri, Kansas governors

(link) https://www.abc27.com/pennsylvania/governor-shapiro-announces-super-bowl-lvii-bets-with-missouri-and-kansas-governors/?mc_cid=b8c631ebda&mc_eid=3ab2f24ac3

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — On Thursday, Governor Josh Shapiro announced that he made friendly bets with Missouri Governor Mike Parson and Kansas Governor Laura Kelly ahead of Super Bowl LVII between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Like millions of Pennsylvanians, Lori and I are excited to cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles and watch them bring the Lombardi Trophy back to the Commonwealth,” said Governor Shapiro. “Pennsylvania is home to the greatest small businesses in the country – and while I love to share the best Pennsylvania has to offer with my friends in other states, the Eagles have been so good this season that I’m willing to double down on a win this week. Go Birds!”

Before the game, Gov. Parson and Gov. Shapiro will exchange Eagles and Chiefs flags. The governor of the losing team will have to hang the flag of the winning team in their office.

Gov. Shapiro has bet an assortment of food from Pennsylvania small businesses as part of the wager with Gov. Kelly. The following foods will be sent to Gov. Kelly if the Chiefs win:
*Soft pretzels from Philly Style Hand Twisted Soft Pretzel Bakery in Levittown, Bucks County
*Cheesesteaks from Tony Luke’s in Philadelphia
*Eagles Mini Donuts from Collegeville Italian Bakery in Montgomery County

If the Eagles win, Gov. Kelly will send Gov. Shapiro the following:
*Creekstone Farms Black Angus Beef
*Chocolate-covered sunflower seeds

I'm rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles this year, since the Steelers didn't make the playoffs.
Go Eagles!

gross. They are only really good when freshly made.

And who thought of chocolate covered sunflower seeds? Being born and raised in Kansas, I've had plenty of chocolate covered "things" and I have had bags of sunflower seeds, but I've never thought about combining the two.

Also, while growing up in the KC suburbs (on the Kansas) side, I was always a Chiefs fan... BUT I always (even in the 1960s) thought the team name was racist... and the horse "war paint" was over the top... and when they adopted the "tomahawk chop" from the Atlanta Braves that was really ugly.... and, last, I never ever associated the Chiefs as being a Kansas team. They are a KCMO team, they play in Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri. Just like St. Louis is not in Illinois, Kansas City is (mostly) not in Kansas. Only some of the nicer suburbs are in Kansas. And some of the not so nicer suburbs.

and I do not see much of any benefit to us being so close to KC where the Chiefs are and I do not think we get anything at all from the Chiefs. I was confused by that as well.

Maybe someone knows more about the new stadium being considered?

They have certainly looked hard at that area (name escapes me now) that is just inside the Kansas border.

given a fair part of KC is in Kansas and the driving distance from Kansas City, KS to Kansas City, MO is a mere 3 miles.

There are (or were) plenty of Colorado Broncos fans on the western side of Kansas. And, this Coloradoan is a Chiefs fan--at least this year.

The entire upper mountain west has to follow teams outside their state if they do at all. Look at where NFL team franchises are located. There are wide berths of the nation for which no city with a major league team exists. If they watch NFL then they are choosing a team and most often the one closest to them in the region.

Can you give me an example of a time this has happened before? I can't think of one. I'll accept any sport.

It's not a big deal that they are doing. I am not objecting. As far as my recollection, I don't remember governors who did not have a state-residing team making wagers with governors who did before this. I will gladly stand corrected with another example.

border, so the Kansas governor represents a ton of KC Chief fans and is undoubtedly one herself. The team bears the name of Kansas City which is partially in Kansas and Missouri.

Knowing the area and the region and the fanbase, it isn't at all unusual to me.

My comment pertained to this being a unique occurrence.

I'm not sure why pursuing this argument is so important to you give that you haven't produced a single example of this happening before which is all you would need do to prove me wrong.

When has a governor of a Superbowl* team ever made a bet with a governor without a Superbowl* team regarding the outcome of the Superbowl*?

* or World Series, Stanley Cup, et al.

Why so rude? I wasn't that way to you. This ought to be a fun thread but instead, you want to argue about a friendly bet by governors associated with the teams and when I tried to explain why the Governor of Kansas is likewise considered part of the mix, you get mad... I just don't get it. Maybe you are having a bad day. Go drink a beer or relax and maybe things will get better.

I was pointing out that this was unique, to which you now seem to agree.

If anything, I'd argue a better reason for including Kansa is that Gov. Parsons is such a stick-in-the-mud; they had to go to Kansas just to add personality.

Again, sorry if I came off rude. Re-reading my posts, I see some frustration seeping through my text. I'm not meaning to be a Gov. Parsons, myself!

when Marty Walsh, then mayor of Boston, was too superstitious to bet on the Patriots (an "Irish thing" as was noted by him in articles although Philly's mayor Jim Kenney is also very much Irish )

Mayor Kenney Enters 'Rocky Bet' With Mayor Of Brockton, Massachusetts

January 25, 2018 / 11:36 PM / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's traditional for mayors from the cities competing in the Super Bowl to make a bet on the outcome, but when the Patriots are playing, the opponents have to get creative.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, true to his Irish heritage, is superstitious. He bet on the Pats a couple of times and they lost, so he stopped, and then they started winning.

Now, he thinks the bets were a jinx and he won't participate. But the mayor of Brockton reached out to Mayor Jim Kenney this week at the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and offered a Rocky versus Rocky wager: Brockton has a statue of Rocky Marciano. Philadelphia, of course, has Rocky Balboa.

The Rocky in the losing city will wear the winner's team garb. Kenney also put up a keg of Yards beer against a case of Stockton's Rocky Marciano wine.

So I totally get it.

Normally I'm rooting AGAINST the New England Patriots (also Baltimore Ravens) in the Super Bowl. If either of those teams gets to the Super Bowl, it means they dashed our hopes to smithereens. Cheating may have occurred, but it's rarely been proven. Remember when Tom Brady and the Patriots played with deflated footballs? That was against the Steelers and he got caught, but the damage was already done. The referees made him play will fully inflated balls for the rest of the game, but the Patriots had already beaten the Steelers in the first half of the big playoff game.
