Woolrich closing the store that was a destination point in Pa.

The original Woolrich outlet store that two decades ago was attracting an estimated 400,000 people annually to the Clinton County town that bears the company name is closing.

“It’s another disappointing story,” Michael Flanagan, president and CEO of the Clinton County Economic Partnership, said Thursday. It used to be a destination point, he said.

A liquidation sale is scheduled May 19-21 with the store closing its doors at the end of June.

Woolrich, which John Rich founded in 1830 and touts itself as “The Original Outdoor Clothing Company,” has been foreign-owned since 2016.

It likely is best known for its red and black check found in wool and flannel shirts and other products. That pattern was introduced in 1850 in the buffalo shirt.

Woolrich blankets were used by the Army in the Civil War and in World Wars I and II.

Pretty soon we'll have one store to buy everything from. It'll be called Walzon.

The parking lot was full of tour buses. Grandparents flooded the insides, buying stuff for the grandkids.

I bought a mountain parka. The velcro that held a front pocket closed was sewn correctly. It was an easy fix. That parka would otherwise have become an L. L. Bean Baxter State Park parka.

That and a pair of snowmobile gloves. Great for driving a motorcycle in the winter.

Sad to see it close.

wore like iron, stayed looking great and I never knew a winter wind and cold that could penetrate them. Yes they cost more but you could have them forever with some basic care. The same with Pendleton wool shirts from back in the day. Before the age of planned obsolescence. You could selectively build your wardrobe from classic styles and good quality a little at a time and then have them forever.

We bought many great gloves, caps and scarves there. My late wife always tried to get us to swing over there when we were in the area.
