Zoning cops aren't just coming for kittens

This is posted in the Pennsylvania forum because the article was prompted by a much publicized zoning battle in Whitehall, PA. The zoning board wanted to shut down Foxy's Cradle, a nursery for sick kittens. Hundreds of Lehigh Valley citizens showed up at Whitehall town meetings to support Foxy's Cradle.

snip> "Kandice Reinert saw a need, so she opened a nursery for sick, injured and abused kittens at her home in North Whitehall Township. The animal rescue operated for more than four years without a complaint about health or safety. Yet the zoning police came anyway. They found clean conditions for the kittens, including some in incubators. None of the animals roamed the neighborhood or bothered anyone. And over 100 residents showed up at a township meeting in support. Yet the township declared the charity, Foxy’s Cradle, illegal anyway."

"Kimberly Dunckel has seen the harm firsthand. She and her family founded a sanctuary for neglected and special-needs farm animals on their farm in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Tenants have included donkeys, bunnies, ducks and a disabled baby goat named Archie."

"Neighbors support the sanctuary, and nobody complained about its existence. Yet the zoning police got involved and tried to shut down the entire operation. After the community rallied to save the sanctuary, zoning officials shifted their strategy. They now enforce rules that will kill the sanctuary slowly rather than all at once. Among other restrictions, the Dunkels cannot have more than three or four volunteers at a time on their land. And they no longer can host special events. They cannot even provide small classes for homeschoolers and Girl Scouts."

Sounds like some influential (or deep pocketed) peeps squeezed (the likely) small cajones. Animal rights swayed a gubernatorial election in my state.

I'll bet they'd win in a landslide because people love kittens.
