Pennsylvania lawmakers, politicos react to former President Donald Trump's conviction

GOP says Biden admin weaponized the justice system, but some say verdict could hurt Trump's chances with Pa. independents

WASHINGTON — Pennsylvania lawmakers and political experts predictably divided along party lines following Thursday’s felony conviction of former President Donald Trump, who is running neck-and-neck with President Joe Biden in the Keystone State.

After a New York jury on Thursday found Mr. Trump guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records tied to hush money payments made to an adult film star during the 2016 campaign, Pennsylvania Republicans quickly echoed Mr. Trump’s long-running accusations of corruption against the Biden administration, which had nothing to do with the case.

Instead, the charges were brought by the elected district attorney for the New York City borough of Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, not the U.S. Justice Department. But that didn’t stop U.S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Peters, the House deputy whip and a longtime Trump supporter, from blaming Mr. Biden.

Mr. Reschenthaler called the trial “the worst abuse of power in American history” on X. “Joe Biden and Alvin Bragg weaponized our judicial system, turning our nation into a banana republic filled with kangaroo courts designed to target their political rivals. Pray for our nation and President Trump.”

And David McCormick, the Republican former hedge fund CEO challenging three-term Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and who has endorsed Mr. Trump for another term, said the case “never should have been brought in the first place.”

”This is a terrible day for America and for trust in our justice system,” Mr. McCormick said on X.

McCormick has been running ads here in western PA touting his West Point education and military service credntials. Can't wait for the Casey campaign to ask him directly if he supports a convicted felon.
