Ethics Commission to investigate Supreme Court justice

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Ethics Commission is investigating a complaint filed against a state Supreme Court justice over his service on the board of a Catholic lawyers' group.

The commission voted Tuesday to begin an investigation into whether Judge Francis Flaherty knowingly violated the ethics code by not disclosing his leadership of the St. Thomas More Society of Rhode Island.

The complaint was filed by a woman who sued the Diocese of Providence after saying she was abused by Brendan Smyth, a notorious pedophile priest.

The woman's lawsuit was dismissed due to the statute of limitations. Flaherty wrote a Supreme Court decision in June rejecting her appeal.
