State Reaches Settlement With Technology Company Over DMV Computer Upgrade

The state of Rhode Island has settled with technology company DXC Technology over the mismanagement of a major computer system overhaul.

The state contracted the company to replace aging technology at the Department of Motor Vehicles. DXC Technology has agreed to a July rollout of the computer upgrade.

The project is nearing seven years behind schedule. Hewlett Packard Enterprise was originally contracted in 2007 to update the DMV’s 40 year-old computer system. (DXC Technology was formed following the merger of HP and information technology company CSC.) The original expected completion date was 2010.

The state sued the company for breach of contract in November of last year, at the time the state had already poured more than $13 million into the project.

The new agreement provides $5.5 million dollars in additional money to help reach the new deadline, and provide tech support once the system is running.
