Central Falls ballot question approved for school construction bond

CENTRAL FALLS – City officials approved a November ballot question asking voters if $26 million in general obligation bonds and notes should be issued to improve local schools. The money would be used to construct, renovate, improve, alter, repair, furnish, and equip schools and school facilities.

The City Council and school officials unanimously voted in favor of adding the question to the ballot for voters to decide. If voters approve the question, officials said it would then go to the General Assembly for final approval during next year’s session.

According to City Solicitor Matt Jerzyk, the $26 million bond represents the difference between the $144 million approved for the new Central Falls High School construction and the $170 million approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education.

The bond would mainly be used to continue the new high school construction on Higginson Avenue, as well as initiate a new K-8 dual language school, which will be built at the current Central Falls High School site on Summer Street.
