SC's role in Jan. 6 Capitol riot comes into clearer focus 1 year later

South Carolinians left their fingerprints all over the events surrounding the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, raising fortunes for some while leaving others on the brink of political peril or prison time.

From stoking the fires of unrest to storming the seat of our nation’s democracy, Palmetto State residents played pivotal roles in the events of that day and the fallout that followed. Their ranks include some of South Carolina’s most powerful politicians, well-connected operatives and everyday people caught up in a swirl of outrage and dissent.

One year later, many have seen their lives changed, their futures altered, as a result of Jan. 6 even as the nation struggles to agree on what sparked the scenes that remain etched in the national consciousness.

Rioters battering police with fists, clubs and flagpoles. Officers exchanging volleys of mace and bear spray with the mob. Chants of “Hang Mike Pence” and “Stop the Steal.” Self-proclaimed patriots streaming through the halls of the Capitol as members of Congress fled.
