MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster will sign a bill that allows medical providers to deny care based on religious beliefs, according to a spokesperson with the governors office.
McMaster is expected to sign the bill Friday afternoon, according to Brian Symmes.
House Bill 4776, also known as the "Medical Ethics and Diversity Act," states A medical practitioner, health care institutions, and health care payers have the right not to participate in or pay for any health care service which violates the practitioners or entitys conscience.
The bill also protects those same health care providers from civil or criminal liability as well as discrimination, with some exceptions. The law does not override federal laws or regulations that require health care providers to issue emergency medical treatment to all patients.

Maybe they should find a different profession if being a doctor conflicts with their beliefs.

(219 posts)Why expect them to do it when a law says they can discriminate at will?
What, you haven't noticed how racially homogenous clienteles are at most clinics?
There's a reason for it, you know.

They can both refuse to treat Jews and Mormons.

(219 posts)Expect it to be almost impossible to find an OB/GYN who will do a tubal ligation on a woman under 40. Or any woman at all. It's already difficult for those under 30. All the male OB/GYNs think we don't know our own minds about how many kids we want. I've had enough ugly arguments with them to know how they are about this issue.
I can only imagine what's going to become of gays and trans people under a law like this. I may not know the specifics of the kind of care they need, but I know whatever happens to them won't be good.

I expect this nonsense to happen here in Texas, soon enough. Fortunately for me, all of my MDs hate the GQP.
