South Carolina colleagues in Congress stand behind Trump budget pick Rep. Mick Mulvaney despite tax problems
WASHINGTON U.S. Sens. Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott still support U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney for White House budget director after revelations surfaced the Republican lawmaker failed to pay more than $15,000 in taxes for child care services more than a decade ago.
The disclosure could complicate Mulvaney's chances to be confirmed as the next director of the Office of Management and Budget, as some Republicans are openly questioning the optics while many Democrats are calling for his withdrawal.
In a sign of some easing of tensions, U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, the South Carolina congressional delegation's sole Democrat and a member of his party's leadership team, said he wanted to give Mulvaney, who is a frequent companion on the golf course, "the benefit of the doubt."
Scott, who was first elected to the U.S. House alongside Mulvaney in 2010, told
The Post and Courier he believes his colleague should get credit for coming forward with the shortcoming rather than trying to hide it.
