Shelby County eyes massive $300M redevelopment of The Med
The aging, publicly-owned Regional One Health campus in Memphis will soon need a $300 million redevelopment, making it one of the county's most expensive construction projects ever, County Mayor Mark Luttrell said Wednesday.
Dr. Reginald Coopwood, CEO of the Regional One Health system since 2010, confirmed Wednesday that his team is working with county officials on a 5- to 6-year plan to demolish and rebuild some of the six buildings on the system's main campus. The county owns the buildings that make up the hospital, which is commonly referred to as "The Med."
"FedExForum pales in comparison to what a new Regional One would cost," Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell said during a commission committee meeting Wednesday.
Most of the campus' buildings are between 45 and 50 years old, "well past their useful life," Coopwood said. The system has the distinction of being the oldest in the state.
