Ardeth Platte, antinuclear activist nun who famously protested Y-12, has died

Ardeth Platte, the tenacious nun who brought her antiwar convictions to Oak Ridge, has died. She was 84.

Sister Carol Gilbert, her roommate and longtime collaborator, confirmed her Sept. 30 death to the New York Times Thursday.

Bearing crutches, the Baltimore nun was one of the first of about a dozen protesters that crossed what's known as the "blue line" that marks the official entry point of the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge during a 2010 protest. Platte, along with others, faced federal charges for the act.

“Nuclear weapons are the taproot of violence,” Platte said at her sentencing hearing, “and they must be abolished. So I refuse to be silent.”
