More repairs needed on I-40 bridge, but may not delay reopening

Not so fast on reopening the Hernando DeSoto Bridge, though transportation officials are still hoping for late July.

A total of 16 plates on the bridge have to be repaired, according to the latest update Monday, July 12, from the Tennessee Department on Transportation.

The 16 plates showed signs of damage after ultrasound testing on more than 500 weld connections separate from the repair work on the beam that showed damage in May, prompting the closing of the major traffic artery across the Mississippi River as of May 11.

The review of an inspection report of the entire bridge span prompted the call for more repair work. Initially, it was thought nine new plates would be needed.
