Former Knox County Republican Party Chairman Ray Jenkins has had enough of the party that has shaped his family and his life, he told Knox News on Friday.
He is no longer a Republican.
He adds his name to the growing list of notable defections from the party as it continues its no-holds-barred appeal to the coarsest part of its base win or lose.
Jenkins grandfather, Erby Jenkins, was a special justice to the Tennessee Supreme Court and a former Knox County and Tennessee GOP chairman who, he said, helped recruit Roy Acuff to run for governor as a Republican in 1948. Jenkins' father, Ray Lee, was a Knox County Criminal Court judge for 25 years until his death in 2007.

(2,055 posts)I grew up in Knoxville. Jenkins is an important local official whose stepping away from the GOP will not make any difference to anyone. Big news in Knoxville but nowhere else.
