Blountville Republican Timothy Hill said Tuesday he will run for Tennessee’s 3rd District House seat, marking his second attempt for the office currently held by outgoing Rep. Scotty Campbell.

“I’m excited about the campaign ahead and the opportunity to make my case to represent the 3rd District,” said Hill, who is running in the Aug. 2 Republican primary.

The election is Nov. 6

“It’s going to be a challenge because it’s such a very large and very diverse district,” Hill said. “But we’ve got a lot of big ideas. And I believe my values very much reflect those of the 3rd District and Northeast Tennessee.”

The district covers all of Johnson County and parts of Carter and Sullivan counties, including Bristol, Blountville and Bluff City.

Last week, Campbell, a Republican from Mountain City, announced he is not seeking a second term. Campbell was elected in November 2010, months after beating Hill and several others in the Republican primary.

Hill, who owns a marketing company and formerly worked as an aide to then-U.S. Rep. David Davis, said he’s been actively organizing and seeking support for the 2012 race “for some time” – and that he’d gained valuable experience from the 2010 primary defeat.

“I don’t think it because of anything I did wrong, because I know we worked really hard,” Hill said of his previous attempt. “But I did learn the importance of running a campaign that [focuses on] the entire district. That’s really become important because this district is even larger than before.”

In the 2010 primary, Hill beat Campbell among Republicans in Sullivan County, but Hill lost the race because Campbell, a Johnson County native, won by a larger margin among voters in that area.

Since then, the district has taken on some sections of Carter County – following a state redistricting plan that rearranged many district areas.

During his 2010 campaign, Hill touted his conservative views on issues ranging from taxes to immigration and he said Tuesday he’ll take a similar strategy this time.

“I’m still very much a conservative and I will stay true to those principles,” said Hill, 30.
