Hundreds of thousands of Israeli 18 year olds handle heavy weaponry, they have mandatory 24 hour access to guns. The difference is they are trained. Trained in the proper use and trained to respect the weapon. There’s a lack of respect for weapons in the USA. Sue me, it’s true.

I suspect those who are having issues are kept from being trained in combat.

Another factor is that they are trained to direct their anger towards Palestinians. In that case the tribalism works for them (sucks for the Palestinians though).

I do think that even teachers carry weapons over there (at least that is what I saw in pictures after Sandy Hook).

The firearm issued to a soldier is not the soldier's property. It is, like the soldier, property of the state, and merely put in the soldier's hands for purposes of state. It is not for the soldier to use outside rules of engagement, and sergeants will make sure the soldier knows it.

This breeds a much different mentality than does the personal purchase of a totem for fetishistic display of masculinity.

Age requirements vary: 21 for those who completed military service or civil service equivalent, 27 otherwise, and 45 for non-citizens. Must pass a background check (criminal, health, and mental history), establish a genuine reason for possessing a firearm (such as self-defense, hunting, or sport), and pass a weapons-training course.[244] Around 40% of applications for firearms permits were rejected.
Those holding firearms licenses must renew them and pass a shooting course every three years. Security guards must pass these tests to renew their license to carry firearms belonging to their employers. Applicants must demonstrate that they have a safe at their residence in which to keep the firearm. Permits are given only for personal use, and holders for self-defense purposes may own only one handgun and purchase an annual supply of 50 cartridges (although more may be purchased to replace rounds used at a firing range)
