Sidney Powell's law license is on the line. But will the hearing be fair?

Dallas lawyer Sidney Powell is certainly taking big hits in Washington, D.C., where the House Jan. 6 committee has singled her out for playing a key role in furthering Donald Trump’s false claims of voter fraud and a stolen election.

But perhaps she has an even bigger battle on her hands here at home, where a suit by the State Bar of Texas seeking sanctions and her possible disbarment is heating up in court. Since the case against her was filed in March, the bar and Powell have exchanged numerous legal blows in a barrage of local court filings. Each side, of course, accuses the other of being politically motivated.

A preliminary hearing on Powell’s motion to dismiss the case is set for Wednesday before a staunchly Republican judge in McKinney. That causes us some pause that the case, already drenched in partisanship, will proceed free of politics. We hope both sides get a fair hearing based solely on the law.

The bar is accusing Powell, who has been licensed to practice law in Texas for 44 years, of professional misconduct in filing “frivolous” voter fraud lawsuits in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin following the November 2020 presidential election. The suits claimed that massive election fraud occurred in these swing states “via a vast conspiracy” involving hacked voting machines, malicious “foreign actors,” election workers and many others who worked to inflate the vote counts in favor of President Joseph Biden, the bar claims. None of Powell’s cases were successful.

If they let her off, they have clearly shown just how far from sanity they have fallen.
