Sixteen Texas Republican lawmakers have asked U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, to resign, citing her support earlier this year of legislation that would deny Secret Service protection to former President Donald Trump.
The request, made in a letter sent Monday, comes on the heels of Trumps attempted assassination last week.
Texans, believe that, regardless of party, Presidents of the United States of America, both current and former, must be protected, the letter reads.
Back in April, Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., introduced legislation denying Secret Service protection for convicted felons sentenced to prison. The Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act or the DISGRACED Former Protectees Act (H.R. 8081) would require prison authorities to be responsible for the protection of all inmates regardless of Secret Service protection.
Unfortunately, current law doesnt anticipate how Secret Service protection would impact the felony prison sentence of a protectee even a former President, Thompson said in a statement. It is regrettable that it has come to this, but this previously unthought-of scenario could become our reality. Therefore, it is necessary for us to be prepared and update the law so the American people can be assured that protective status does not translate into special treatment and that those who are sentenced to prison will indeed serve the time required of them.
In May, Trump became the first former U.S. president convicted of felony crimes. A New York jury found the 78-year-old guilty on 34 charges tied to him illegally falsifying records to cover up a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, an adult film star, before the 2016 election......
Since you, just three months ago, sponsored legislation to remove his Secret Service protective detail, we, the undersigned current and future members of the Texas Legislature, call on you to immediately resign your position in Congress, the letter reads. You have forfeited any moral authority to represent the State of Texas.
Crockett, along with Reps. Troy A. Carter Sr., Barbara Lee, Frederica Wilson, Yvette D. Clarke, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Joyce Beatty and Steve Cohen, cosponsored the bill. The Chronicle reached out to Crocketts office, who declined to comment. On the day of the shooting, Crockett wrote, my thoughts are with Mr. Trump as he recovers on X.
My deepest appreciation is extended to law enforcement for their selfless & decisive action, she added. Political violence in all forms must be condemned.
