08/31/2024 10:58 PM
A portion of seating at the Kendall County Fairgrounds rodeo arena can be seen hanging down, separated from its support, after it collapsed Saturday.
Twelve people were injured Saturday when a portion of seating in the Kendall County Fairgrounds rodeo arena collapsed. City officials said eight people were transported to area hospitals, while four were treated at the scene with lesser injuries. No updates on their conditions were available Saturday evening.
The incident occurred at 9:17 p.m. at the rodeo arena, on the third day of its annual four-day pre-Labor Day run. Saturdays schedule showed musician Bailey Rae performing at 8 p.m., with the pro rodeo under way as of 8 p.m.
The fair was closed, and patrons were escorted away from the area of the collapse and off the grounds. A 10 p.m. performance by Coffey Anderson was cancelled.
The Boerne Fire Marshals Office and Permitting and Code Compliance Office will inspect the rodeo grounds Sunday morning to ensure the publics safety before the fair will be allowed to continue.

79-year-old Vera Smith, critically injured in the Aug. 31 bleacher collapse at the Kendall County Fairground, has died, the Kendall County Emergency Management Office confirmed Friday.
Smith, mother of Kendall County Fair Association Secretary Patti Smith-McCreless, was seated atop the bleachers last Saturday in a Kendall County Fair Association VIP section, where tables and stools were arranged on level surface in a seating area reserved for fair association members and guests.
When the steel structure supporting the bleachers collapsed, Smith and 11 others were injured as they plummeted to the ground below.

Kendall County Fair Association failed to secure permits necessary before constructing a new bleacher seating area work that continued up to the day before the event that collapsed last weekend.
A release issued Thursday by the city of Boerne tells of the lack of permitting for the reassembled bleacher section, which ccollapsed Aug 31 killing a 79-year-old woman and injuring 11 others.
The city is contracting with an independent structural engineer to evaluate the collapsed structure and provide a report regarding the failed bleacher structure, an inspection scheduled to be completed com- next week. That report will be made available to the city within the next three weeks.
