Texans react to 'jumpscare' Texas Monthly Ted Cruz cover

Nearly 1,200 comments have been submitted on one of Texas Monthly's Instagram posts within the past week. That engagement dwarfs anything else the outlet has shared on the platform for weeks. The post in question? October's cover that simply asks, "The New Ted Cruz?" as overlaid over its namesake subject.

Yes, the October issue features at nearly 8,000 words profile on the junior senator from Texas. It's an arduous read and senior writer Michael Hardy does a stupendous job of piecing together the explosive figure across the 24-page spread after shadowing Ted Cruz across various days and "interviewing more than a dozen of his colleagues, staffers and supporters."

Though the piece was posted just over three days ago, the social commentary took an almost-immediate turn. Are the comments tea leaves for November's election (Democrat Colin Allred is campaigning on a 1% lead, after all)? Are Texans fully over the guy? Or do we just love a little online schadenfreude?
