Utah law requires ballot boxes be under 24/7 video surveillance

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Fires were set at two ballot drop boxes — one in Portland, Oregon, and the other in Vancouver, Washington — resulting in the destruction of hundreds of ballots.

With just one week until Election Day, 2News investigated the safety measures in place to protect ballot boxes in Utah.

In Utah, state law requires video surveillance of all unmanned ballot drop boxes.

This law, designed to prevent such incidents, requires these boxes to be monitored 24/7, ensuring any suspicious activity is recorded.

1. The larger number of ballots destroyed was in Vancouver.

The fire in the Portland drop box was suppressed by a fire suppression system. Fortunately, only 3 ballots were badly damaged.

Vancouver and environs is where most of the local Proud Boys come from.

I fervently hope that the perp is caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The suspect car was caught on video, and enough of the incendiary devices that were used at both locations was collected and examined, which is why local LEO's believe that the incidents are definitely connected.

The type of people who would commit this outrage are not known for either their intelligence nor cleverness. It takes collosal arrogance and conceit to try and interfere with the people's right to vote. My guess is that they will try again, which increases their chances of getting caught.

I hand carried my ballot into the mail slot inside the post office because I had read the account of the incident in Arizona, and I didn't want to take any risks with my ballot.

My state also has a ballot tracking system, which voters can sign up for. My ballot has already been accepted and counted.

I would hope that a similar system will become available nationwide.

Anyone in Portland or Vancouver whose ballot may have been affected by the arson, can contact their county election office to arrange for getting a replacement.
