Wasatch County leading candidate files lawsuit after being disqualified post-election

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — The leading candidate for a seat on the Wasatch County school board is suing the county clerk after he was disqualified more than a week after election day.

Tom Stone was leading in the race for Seat E on the local school board, that is, before he received a letter from the county clerk on Nov. 14 claiming he was disqualified for filing a financial document two days late.

Stone said the financial statement was the “farthest thing from my mind” as his son’s wife went into labor early with his third granddaughter. He said the two other grandchildren had complications at birth so the labor “was a big, serious deal.”

He filed the financial statement — disclosing a self-funded campaign with zero outside contributions — two days after and didn’t receive any complaints from the county clerk until more than a week after election day.
