Nurses, UVM Medical Center to resume negotiations July 24, but for now, remain far apart

Nurses at the University of Vermont Medical Center and the hospital administration will resume contract talks on July 24, according to a spokesman for the hospital.

The nurses went on strike for two days on Thursday and Friday after last-minute negotiations broke down Wednesday night, despite the fact that Eileen Whalen, president of the medical center and a registered nurse, personally came to the bargaining table.

Laurie Aunchman, president of the nurses' union, confirmed that the two sides would return to the negotiating table in eight days.

"I think that giving both parties time to regroup and come to the table fresh is a good idea," Aunchman said.
