Five bills that have a better chance in Montpelier now that Gov. Scott can't stop them
Democratic lawmakers return in full force to the Statehouse this week, eager to try again on bills that Gov. Phil Scott blocked last year.
At the top of the Democrats' list are measures aimed at helping working Vermonters, including a paid family leave insurance program and a bill that would raise the minimum wage.
Scott, who rejected those bills in 2018, can no longer count on having enough support to uphold his veto in the House of Representatives. Democrats and Progressives gained a veto-proof super-majority in November and maintained their dominance in the Senate.
There could be some changes from what passed in prior years. Committees in both bodies will have new leaders and different members. And within the 95-member House Democratic caucus, 30 lawmakers are new to Montpelier.
