Just saw a Trumpkin...err...I mean Youngkin ad with about 50 Sheriffs saying Terry McCoulegh is basically going to release all these criminals to come assault white girls.
Ok, it wasn't quite that bad, but there really was no doubt what the ad was implying.
Despite the unseemliness of uniformed law enforcement appearing in political ads (we don't allow uniformed military to appear in political ads), what struck me was a "WTF, are there NO sane sheriffs in VA"? moment
Makes me wonder if the whole "elected sheriff" shit needs to be reformed.
Are these sheriffs not obligated to enforce the laws of the state?
Seems like, at a minimum, sheriff should be a nonpartisan occupation.

(8,824 posts)All with little Republican Sheriffs, but the big counties, where the votes are often have democratic sheriffs, Fairfax County had a female democratic sheriff.

I'm not sure that the whole idea of sheriffs hasn't run it's course from a byegone era.
Most don't think the Constitution applies to them, or worse, think the Constitution gives them some kind of super extra-constitutional power.
