'I just could not believe this was happening': Warren County mother says school division failed to protect her son

“This has flipped our lives entirely upside down.”

Virginia Cram said her family has been altered by what she believes is a failure of the Warren County school division to protect her child. Virginia and her husband Dana Cram have three children, two in middle school and one in elementary. The Crams moved to Warren County in 2020 and enjoyed their time there until Aug. 24.

On that day, her son attending Skyline Middle school was “sucker punched” resulting in a broken jaw that required numerous surgeries. According to Virginia Cram, the aggressor and her son knew of each other but were not in the same friend group. She said the two had no issues with each other prior to that incident.

Recalling that day, the Crams said they received a phone call from the school, but they were initially uncertain of the severity of the situation because of the nature of the call. The voice message didn't mention anything about her son being injured, Virginia Cram said. But she said when she returned the call less than 10 minutes later she was told if she was not able to get to Skyline Middle School in 10 minutes, then they would call 911.

“It didn’t feel real,” she said about what she saw when she picked her son up at the school. “When they brought him to the car he had gauze stuffed in his mouth to where there was blood all over the gauze, where it looked like a chipmunk…it just felt like I was there but also wasn’t there. I just could not believe this was happening.”

The Crams said the front of their son's jaw was broken and three adult teeth had been dislodged. A third tooth risks getting infected and may have to be removed. They said their son is a liquid-only diet and sees an endodontist, periodontist, and orthodontist for treatment.
