Fairfax County police chief Kevin Davis released video Wednesday showing the scene of a “street takeover” in Springfield, Virginia, over the weekend that he described as “utter chaos and disorder.”

According to Davis, a large group of people gathered for a party in a parking lot and were driving recklessly, speeding and doing doughnuts — and things turned ugly when an officer showed up.

“I believe we narrowly escaped a line-of-duty death scenario,” Davis said. “One of our own officers was surrounded by a bunch of masked tough guy wannabe thugs who surrounded her car and acted in a criminal manner.”

According to Davis, they will from now on dispatch a “civil disturbance unit” if the department gets a call about a street takeover incident. … “We’re not going to be caught in a situation again where it’s one of us versus dozens of them who want to do us harm,” Davis said.

1. I don't love it, but it's better in a parking lot than public roads

in DC, they do this idiocy on public intersections. Which does bother people who live in the area.

Ideally, these folks could take some of the money they spend on cars and rent an actual permitted space for this activity.

But I guess the outlaw nature of it is a big part of the appeal.

Sure it was a scary experience for a single police officer, but I didn't see any weapons or death threats.

Several people have been identified and charged in connection to a “street takeover” in Springfield on Sunday (March 31).

The Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Wednesday) that detectives arrested and charged an 18-year-old man from Woodbridge and a 17-year-old Arlington man who allegedly took part in a rowdy “mob” in a parking lot in the 6600 block of Electronic Drive around 3 a.m.

When officers pulled into the parking lot on Sunday, they found a “large group of individuals driving recklessly in circle,” police said in a news release.

According to the release, when a police cruiser drove up to confront the group, they encircled the vehicle, preventing it from moving. At least one individual attempted to remove the cruiser’s license plate, while others “acted disorderly.”
