Related: About this forumThe power has gone out eight times tonight.
Finally, an hour after the last failure, I'd say we're...
Make that nine times.

(61,437 posts)I think it's localized rather than widespread. I can see lights elsewhere in my fair city.
The neighbors across the street are on a different fed than I am. It is not unknown that I am without power, but I can see lights on across the street.
And we're up to ten times now. I don't think it's vegetation.

Oh, no.

(61,437 posts)Weve traced the Alexandria/Arlington outage to a circuit at a substation. Thats whats causing the flickering. Our crews are on it and trying to get your power back ASAP!

(17,515 posts)Then that is what is causing it.
Look, we invented the internet and we damned well aren't going to allow anyone to post anti-biden messaging.
We are an all knowing and vengeful entity.
Be warned. Now go stand in traffic so we can squish you.

Perhaps something wrong there is opening the recloser on your feed. The center is near the Episcopal High School where John McCain was schooled and where I was working a wedding when the August 12, Unite the Right crap happened at home.

(61,437 posts)The issue over the summer was a burned out lightning arrester on one of the phase conductors. The issue last week was a branch that drifted into a phase conductor.
I am familiar with how an automatic recloser normally operates. An automatic recloser will usually make two attempts at reenergizing the line, to make sure that the squirrel is good and fried, and then give up, figuring that the problem is big enough to warrant a service call.
Last week, the recloser tried to reenergize the line twice. It was to no avail, as the vegetation was still up against the line. It was a tree branch. The lineman came out with a power saw on the end of a pole. Working from ana elevated bucket, he cut off a bunch of branches.
The line clearance did the trick.

(18,174 posts)Alexandria 10,065 out of 66,01 and Arlington 1,186 out of 98,040 this is much more than earlier.
The reclosers on the feeds to our factory had three tries set. A few seconds and then ten and then thirty. We were tapped into the higher voltage feed between substations and all the reclosers were radio reporting and radio controlled. The lower voltage circuits that fed some of the other buildings seemed to have a try twice recloser circuit.
