Medical school applications are up, according to data from a service that processes them, including at a Virginia medical school, which reports a 48% increase in applications compared to last year.
Dr. Melanie Prusakowski is the associate dean of admissions at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. She said there is an unprecedented increase in the number of applications this year at the school.
And its not just at Virginia Tech. The American Medical College Application Service reported in October that there were more than 7,500 additional applications nationwide, an increase of nearly 17%. And nearly two dozen medical schools reported a jump of at least 25%, the Association of American Medical Colleges said in a news release.
What were seeing is well, well beyond that, and I think its pretty exciting, Prusakowski said. ... In the last 10 years, AAMC said a typical year-over-year increase in medical school applications was 3%.

My grandfather left Hampton Sydney College for the army during WWI, then finished and went on to medical school at MCV. I'm sure the 1918 Flu Epidemic inspired him to study medicine.

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine has seen a 48 percent increase in applications for the class of 2025 compared to last year. The medical school is located in Roanoke, Virginia, adjacent to the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC. It is also co-located with Carilion Clinic outpatient centers and the health system's Level 1 Trauma Center, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, all within walking distance. Students complete their clinical rotations in Carilion facilities.
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine received 6,374 applications, a 48 percent increase from last year's total of 4,299.
The schools application deadline for the Class of 2025, which has 49 available seats, was Dec. 1.
More and more people are discovering the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and recognizing it as a place to become systems-minded scientist physicians, said Lee Learman, dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. In addition, our continued success in matching all of our graduates to top-choice residency programs is attractive to prospective students.
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine has been in demand since the first class started their studies in 2010, but has become more competitive each year. Over the past five years, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine averaged around 4,000 applications for less than 50 available positions.
Medical school applications are up nationwide this year. The American Medical College Application Service, which processes submissions for most U.S. medical schools, reported a nearly 17 percent increase in applications near the end of October. In the past decade, the year-over-year increase has averaged less than 3 percent.
