Seattle breaks cold weather records as frigid air grips the Puget Sound region

It's time to layer up, because the cold air in western Washington will stick around through at least the end of the workweek, causing frigid temperatures across the region. There's also another chance of lowland snow showers for the weekend.

Seattle set a new daily record cold high temperature Thursday with it only reaching 35 degrees at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, according to KOMO News Meteorologist Shannon O'Donnell. The previous record cold high temperature was 36 degrees set just a year ago on Feb. 23, 2022.

Seattle also broke the daily record low temperature Friday morning, according to KOMO News Meteorologist Kristin Clark. A low of 21 degrees was recorded at Sea-Tac airport, breaking the old record of 24 degrees set in 2011

Many counties across western Washington opened warming shelters for people to escape the cold. The King County Regional Homelessness Authority has a list of its shelters available here. You can view shelter openings for Snohomish County here, and the city of Tacoma has resources on its website here.
