Space Needle ditching orange paint job, returning to 'Astronaut White' in May
The Seattle Space Needle is ditching its "Galaxy Gold" orange coloring in favor or a new paint job this May.
Officials announced Thursday the sloped roof of the Space Needle will be repainted back to "Astronaut White" next month as part of its 60th anniversary celebration.
Last year, the Seattle icon was painted the current goldish-orange color, which was the original roof color from 1962.
Officials said top fundraisers from the annual Base 2 Space charity stair climb will harness in and take to the sloped roof to lay the first coat of Astronaut White paint, presented as a special honor reserved for those top fundraisers at Base 2 Space, raising funds for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
