Affordable housing project in U District moves forward

Weber Thompson is designing a residential tower in the University District of Seattle, and Turner Construction has been hired to do the predevelopment work, Bellwether Housing said Tuesday.

As previously reported, the University of Washington and Seattle Housing Authority selected the nonprofit Bellwether to develop the project at 4201 Roosevelt Ave. NE.

The project's latest details were listed Tuesday on the city's early outreach blog. It states the tower will be 16 stories with 240 homes. At least 140 units will be set aside for households with incomes that are below 60% of the area median. The balance will be rented to households earning below 80% and 100% area-median income.

The estimated tower cost is $163 million. Bellwether will lease the ground from the UW, and plans to use a mix of public and private funding.
