Seattle unveils plan to incentivize use of electric freight vehicles

The city of Seattle is launching an electric trucks pilot program designed to transition local truck drivers away from diesel-fueled freight vehicles in an effort to improve air quality in the Duwamish Valley area.

The city will allocate $1.7 million in rebates through its electric vehicle incentive, giving drivers up to $180,000 per truck through a point-of-sale rebate program. That equates to a minimum of nine trucks.

The electric trucks pilot program is part of the city's plan cut emissions by delivery vehicles significantly by the year 2030. The goal is to bring more electric drayage trucks to the Duwamish Valley of Georgetown, South Park and parts of Tukwila, over the next two years. Drayage trucks run cargo from ports to distribution centers.

Duwamish Valley is home to several major highways and is an industrial hub. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency considers the valley’s air quality to be highly affected by commercial activity.
