A look at areas in Bremerton that may be authorized to allow public camping
An ordinance to limit unauthorized camping in Bremerton but allow encampments on certain parcels of city-owned land has been proposed by the city council, with a study session scheduled for Wednesday to continue discussing the proposal.
In response to collective encampments growing in areas near downtown Bremerton, the council drafted an ordinance to outline new areas where campers will be allowed to go, while being able to clear these areas. Under the ordinance, camping would be made illegal at parks and on streets, sidewalks and the space between streets and sidewalks. Instead, homeless campers would be able to set up their tents in undeveloped city-owned parcels.
The public was given an introduction to a map of the camp-able undeveloped parcels on Sept. 6, a specific list of which may be viewed online by downloading the city council's packet from its Sept. 6 meeting from the city website. The eagle-eye-view map details camp-able areas in green and marks prohibited areas in red.
The gallery highlights a few of the ordinance's listed camp-able parcels to give a ground-level view of their proximity to resources and residences and their feasibility for homeless campers.
