We knew what it was, because the mountain started to spit and fume in March.

"People are saying - a lot of people in fact - that this is a great time to visit the St. Helens area. I think a lot of Democrats want you to stay away - and China! - but are we going to let them ruin it for everyone? I don't think so."
And then the day after:
"You hear a lot of people say this: If only Governor Dixie-Lee-whatever had listened to Trump. Why didn't she listen to Trump?"

We were lucky we instead had a good president, who actually believed in the power of the federal government to help when needed (and not just in making his daughter and son-in-law filthy rich):

(7,080 posts)the lake rose WAY higher. Scientists believed all aquatic life was lost. Few years later they discovered tiny fish! Somehow nature managed to keep the ecosystem intact. Wow.

(68,328 posts)At a Boy Scout Jamboree. The wind was blowing the other way, so none of us knew about it until helicopters from Fort Lewis started blazing past overhead on the way to the disaster site. Someone in the adjacent campsite heard it on the radio.
