Seattle moves to comply with state law to allow more backyard cottages

If your desire to build an accessory dwelling unit has been stymied by an irregularly shaped lot, help is on the way.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell on Monday proposed legislation to streamline the permitting and production of accessory dwelling units, or backyard cottages.

It's in response to a 2023 state law that gives local jurisdictions until June 2025 to ease barriers to the construction of ADUs.

Building off the existing code in Seattle’s neighborhood residential zones, the legislation would standardize the ADU code citywide.
