A Rainelle coal miner died Wednesday after being injured at a Greenbrier County mine, according to the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training.

Roger W. Herndon, 33, an auger helper at the Princess Polly Anna & JCT Enterprises LLC Surface Mine #1, was pronounced dead at Humana Hospital in Greenbrier County. That’s according to an email from Samantha Smith, a spokeswoman for the Department of Commerce, which includes the miners’ office.

“Preliminary information indicates the injuries occurred when he was struck in the side by a piece of auger drill steel,” around 11 a.m., the email said. ... Inspectors from the office are investigating, the email said.

This is the eighth coal mining death in the nation this year, and the fourth in West Virginia, according to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.
