WV Gov. Justice, Marion Health Dept. admonish Fairmont church for holding large event

FAIRMONT — Covenant Church in Fairmont was admonished by Gov. Jim Justice and the Marion County Health Department after holding an event July 12 with no social distancing or mask enforcement.

Covenant Church hosted events led by Jeremiah Johnson Ministries, an organization based out of Florida that has been touring throughout the summer, visiting Dallas, Texas, on July 7 before the West Virginia event.

Pictures of the event gained traction on social media, leading Gov. Jim Justice to directly address the gathering — which allegedly saw 500 people attend from five different states, according to Jeremiah Johnson’s Facebook page — during his July 13 press conference.

“I’m a Christian, and I’m proud of it, and I truly understand the importance of church,” Justice said. “At the same time, we cannot keep doing this. We just can’t.”
