After starting off as a rather genteel affair, the race for Milwaukee County sheriff is ending on an especially sour tone.
Acting Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt is calling on his chief opponent, Earnell Lucas, to denounce a mailer from the pro-immigration Voces de la Frontera. The flyer features a well-known photoshopped picture of President Donald Trump with his arm around Schmidt's shoulder.
"I have never met nor talked to Donald Trump," Schmidt said by email.
But he was just getting warmed up.
Schmidt, who is running against Lucas and Deputy Robert Ostrowski in Tuesday's Democratic primary, called the mailer both "very wrong" and an "outright lie."

How could the race end on a sour note when the whole piece of music was sour including Schmidt's anti-LGBT opinions?

(3,577 posts)The speaker on the ad has a gruff, tough-guy type of speech. He paints Schmidt as having great experience as a sheriff's deputy and says he has turned the department around in his year as acting sheriff (he went along with David Clarke's program while serving as undersheriff, the second in command when Clarke was out of town, which was often). The speaker says Lucas was "a fancy bodyguard" and has not been certified to carry a gun for 16 years (it's important for the sheriff himself to be out on the street with a gun?). He's referring to the 16 years that Lucas has been in charge of security for Major League Baseball. He says Lucas has zero correctional experience but ignores his service as a police captain and the three law enforcement institutions where Lucas has studied, including the FBI. Then the speaker states that Schmidt is a registered Democrat and has paid his dues (didn't say how long, because the Milwaukee Dems would tell you that Schmidt joined just this spring: the way Republicans treat the sheriff's election is to run as Democrats and try to win in the primary rather than run a candidate for November).
Vote Lucas!
