Scott Walker and Tony Evers blame each for lack of progress on black students' performance

MADISON - Wisconsin's massive gap in academic performance between its black and white students is under the spotlight of the governor's race as the candidates blame each other for not doing more to address the persistent problem.

Wisconsin has held the distinction among states of having the largest gap in academic performance between its black and white students by some measures and that disparity has only shrunk slightly in the past 10 years, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

"After calling the effort to close Wisconsin's achievement gap a priority and promising significant improvement, Tony Evers has FAILED to make notable progress in his 9+ years in office," Gov. Scott Walker tweeted on Monday of his Democratic challenger.

State Superintendent Tony Evers and Department of Public Instruction officials shot back, saying Walker has rejected more than a dozen budget proposals since 2013 that the DPI sought in an effort to improve academic performance among black students.
