GOP vote on Affordable Care Act creates $1.4 billion gap between their plan and Gov. Evers' budget
MADISON - The Legislature's budget committee removed more than 130 provisions Thursday from Gov. Tony Evers' budget, including his plan to extend health coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
The vote was the first in a weeks-long process of rewriting the Democratic governor's two-year, $83 billion spending plan. The measure passed 11-4, with all Republicans for it and all Democrats against it.
The vote created a $1.4 billion gap between Evers' spending plan and the Republican budget that is being developed, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau. Much of that amount comes from forgoing additional federal aid and blocking tax increases on manufacturers and capital gains.
Republicans have long said they believe Evers' budget spends too much money but haven't specified all the spending they plan to block.
