GOP transportation plan would allow handful of legislators to impose vehicle fees of any amount

MADISON - Sixteen lawmakers on their own could impose fees of any amount to help pay for roads under a plan Republican legislators advanced late Thursday.

The proposal would allow the Joint Finance Committee to establish new fees based on how many miles vehicles drove, starting in 2023. The rest of the Legislature wouldn't get a say in the matter under the plan.

Republicans on the committee included the provision in a massive transportation package they added to the state budget Thursday.

The GOP-controlled Legislature is scheduled to vote on the budget this month. If the measure survives and Democratic Gov. Tony Evers signs it, the committee would be free to put the new fees in place.

I live in California where the roads are GREAT. The fuel tax is the same as the federal tax or we pay twice the tax for better roads. I laugh at places that have "toll" roads. I understand paying a bridge toll. This little state may have bad roads because there are to many republicans which always want a "free" lunch for nothing. Republicans always put off paying for something until it is to late then make the wrong people pay for their mistake. I have noticed when republicans are in charge of the government things get really screwed up and the democrats have to work hard to correct the mistake. Republicans always forget they caused big mistakes.........
