Madison woman beaten, has car stolen while loading groceries; suspect arrested after chase

MADISON, Wis. — A 34-year-old Middleton man was arrested Friday morning after police said he beat a woman and stole her car at a Madison Walmart before leading deputies on a chase through parts of Sauk, Columbia and Dane counties. The Madison Police Department said a woman reported being beaten before her car was stolen as she was loading groceries in her car around 7:45 a.m. Friday at the Walmart on Nakoosa Trail on the city’s east side.

The victim said she was loading groceries into her car when a man approached her and demanded that she give him the keys to her 2013 Range Rover. The man reportedly beat her when she refused. Two store employees came out to help the woman, but one of the employees was hit by the car as the man stealing it was backing up. The employee and the woman reported minor injuries, but neither was taken to the hospital.

In a news release Friday afternoon, Lodi Police Chief Wayne Smith said Sauk County officials reported ending a pursuit of the stolen vehicle as it headed east on State Highway 60 into Columbia County toward Lodi. A Columbia County deputy saw the vehicle head into Lodi around 10:35 a.m.; minutes later, Smith tried to stop the vehicle but the driver didn’t stop.

A second Lodi officer used a tire deflation device, but the driver kept going, eventually leaving Lodi and heading back to Dane County on State Highway 113. Eventually, he spun out and jumped out of the vehicle, at which point he was arrested. Neither the man nor any officers were hurt in the chase.
