How Wisconsin certifies election results without partisan delays
Wisconsin election workers and voting rights advocates say they are confident local and state officials will properly sign off on November’s results, avoiding the chaos some fear will happen in other states if there are delays in certifying the outcome.
Concerns about another protracted fight over the presidential results highlight the fact that the election process doesn’t end after the votes are tabulated on election night. Officials must validate and approve the numbers so winning candidates can officially be named, a process called canvassing and certifying the results.
Historically, the process has been a formality and didn’t receive much attention unless a candidate asked for a recount. But as tensions rise ahead of the 2024 presidential election, the certification process is taking center stage.
The debate has been most intense in Georgia, where new rules allow election officials to make a “reasonable inquiry” into election results before certifying them. This has raised concern that the rules are overly vague and give local and state officials the ability to delay results if they don’t like the outcome of the vote.
