SPOTLIGHT RACE: David Marstellar for WI-AD21

Born in 1961, David grew up in various parts of the Deep South and Midwest. His father, a U.S. Navy veteran, completed four tours during the Vietnam Conflict, instilling in David a deep respect for service and dedication. David’s involvement with the Boy Scouts further shaped his character, and at age 15, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. It was at this young age that David discovered his passion for politics while volunteering for the Ford-Dole campaign. After his father’s death, David was raised by his mother, a single parent and accountant, whose hard work and perseverance became a cornerstone of David’s character. His grandmother also played a crucial role, teaching him generosity and the importance of listening.

David attended the University of Oklahoma and then entered the floriculture industry, where he quickly rose to prominence over nearly 40 years, managing large firms across the Midwest. His expertise in floral design and management earned him induction into the American Institute of Floral Designers in 2000, where he later served on the South-Central and North-Central Board of Directors. David’s leadership in the floriculture industry was marked by innovation and excellence, traveling across the country to give seminars and presentations, sharing his passion and knowledge.

In 2008, David’s political journey took a significant turn when he joined the Obama for America campaign. His role in opening the Des Moines headquarters and serving as precinct captain for the Iowa Caucuses was pivotal. This experience not only deepened his commitment to public service but also shaped his political philosophy, emphasizing the importance of hope, unity, and pragmatic solutions to the challenges facing communities.

David’s personal journey with healthcare began with a profound experience. In January 2025, he will celebrate six years as a heart transplant survivor. This life-changing event, made possible by the Affordable Care Act, reinforced his dedication to advocating for accessible and affordable healthcare for all. Tragically, David’s younger brother, who had the same congenital heart issue, was not as fortunate. Due to a lapse in his healthcare coverage, he was unable to receive the necessary medical care and passed away. This heartbreaking loss has only strengthened David’s resolve to fight for a healthcare system that works for everyone, ensuring that no family has to endure such preventable tragedies.

David’s dedication to public service is also reflected in his personal life. Living in the Garden District with his long-term partner, Issy Ramon, and their two beloved dogs, Mateo and Quique, David has built a life dedicated to justice and community service. Issy, originally from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, a noted attorney and Marquette University Law School graduate, was appointed by Governor Tony Evers as the Milwaukee County Register of Deeds in May 2019. His appointment followed a significant scandal involving his predecessor, who was implicated in a $2.8 million fraud scheme. Issy’s dedication to restoring integrity and transparency to the office has been a source of inspiration for David. Together, they have faced the challenges of injustice and corruption head-on, strengthening their resolve to advocate for their community.

David has served as chair of two different caucuses within the Democratic Party of Wisconsin and is a member of the Latino Caucus. His involvement in local politics reflects his commitment to improving the lives of his neighbors and ensuring that every voice is heard. David’s campaign for the Wisconsin State Assembly aims to bridge the gap between old and new Midwesterners, connecting long-standing traditions with contemporary issues. He understands the challenges faced by diverse groups within his community, from economic stability and affordable housing to community safety and environmental stewardship.

Throughout his life, David Marstellar has demonstrated a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether through his leadership in the Boy Scouts, his innovative work in the floriculture industry, or his passionate advocacy in politics, David embodies the spirit of a true Midwesterner. His dedication to service, his commitment to his community, and his unwavering belief in the power of hope and unity, and his willingness to work in a true bipartisan fashion make him a compelling candidate for the Wisconsin State Assembly. David Marstellar’s story is one of resilience, leadership, and an unyielding commitment to the values that unite us. He is ready to bring his wealth of experience and his deep-rooted Midwestern values to Madison, working tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all residents of Wisconsin Assembly District 21.
