Inside the battle for the Wisconsin Legislature
WINDSOR — On an unusually warm, early fall Saturday, residents in this suburban enclave north of Madison had plenty on their minds.
Some plopped down in front of a television to watch the Wisconsin Badgers take on a Big Ten rival in football. Others shepherded children to hockey tournaments or prepared for the homecoming dance later that evening. A few enterprising youngsters started a lemonade stand, capitalizing on their family’s rummage sale.
Sarah Keyeski, a Democrat running for state Senate and knocking on doors that day in Windsor, is trying to break through the noise of everyday life to get her message out. She also has to compete with one of the most chaotic presidential election cycles in American history, one where Wisconsin is expected to play a decisive role.
Her race against Republican Sen. Joan Ballweg could determine who sets policy for Wisconsin in the coming years. New maps enacted by the Legislature earlier this year gave Democrats a pathway to reclaiming power in the state Assembly. If Keyeski is able to unseat Ballweg while fellow Democrats pick up other seats, the party could also be well-positioned in the state Senate.
