Economist said Wyoming tax structure a reason it lacks economic diversity

CASPER – The committee tasked with developing a strategy to diversify Wyoming’s economy is on schedule, as it presented its preliminary findings to state lawmakers Friday.

ENDOW, which stands for Economically Needed Diversity Options for Wyoming, is Gov. Matt Mead’s initiative to find the long-elusive answer to diversifying Wyoming’s economic base. The state is trying to emerge from the latest downturn in the ongoing boom-and-bust cycle related to its breadbasket mineral commodities, which account for 70 percent of its revenue.

The initiative’s executive council was scheduled to present its preliminary findings in August, which it did in a report issued Thursday. Those findings were presented to the

Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Minerals, Business and Economic Development Interim Committee in Casper on Friday. It’s expected the council will recommend a number of legislative measures for lawmakers to consider during its 2018 budget session, which begins in February.
